Coffee Society is Thailand’s most gay-friendly coffee shop & café in the heart of Bangkok on Silom, open 24 hours a day with free WiFi, and just a very short walk from the Saladaeng BTS Sky Train station.
The clientele range from local Thais to tourists from around the world and expats working in Thailand—and many people come from outside the Silom area to enjoy the surroundings of Coffee Society.
With Silom Soi 2 (home of DJ Station) and 4 (Balcony, Telephone Bar, Bearbie, Sphinx) nearby, Coffee Society is very popular with the local and international gay community who are very welcome.
The current owners are a hip British/Thai couple who are champions of creating the ultimate gay-friendly environment where all are welcome. They bought the place as they explain, "because it is perhaps the only road in Thailand that is operational 24 hours a day, an obvious daytime commercial center with major office buildings, but also very exciting at night because of the world-famous Patpong and other entertainment venues."
"Free internet usage is also important," stated the owner. "This is the center of a lot of tourists and businessman and women that pass though the area, and the free WiFi makes it such a great place for them. It also makes a kind of social point as well because this is a very social place—it is a place that is held in high esteem for a lot of people who have been here, have been coming here for a number of years, and reflects the movements in brasseries of the 19th and 20th centuries in social city life."
The delightful staff among them speak four languages, and reflect the same mix of the clientele itself. Management and staff have been "going green" and working to have a smaller environmental footprint as they say, not only with simple changes such us using better light bulbs, but also striving diligently to use locally-grown produce as opposed to imported items. They want to earn the reputation as being "a Thai produce café.
Also concerned for your health, they are in the process of slowing refining their menu, easing off salt and sugar-based products, adding some organic items, and more. In addition, other upgrades are in process, but don't expect the place to take on a corporate look. Coffee Society will retain an atmospheric look and feel all its own.
One of the next steps is to expand the physical size of the kitchen to increase its capacity to further serve take-away needs of the greater business community. The updating and upgrading of the décor in a gradual ongoing process.
The owners are proud that Coffee Society is "a safe and discreet environment for people of all sexualities who wish to meet up with their partners or their new partners or somebody else. It is the perfect stopping-off point on Silom and before or after hours."
Coffee Society is actually my office! I can be found there almost any day working on my various web sites. For those without their own computers, the second floor offers several coin-operated computers for a quick check of your email, with premium people watching as the computers face the popular patio.
In fact, a great draw of Coffee Society is the outdoor seating area—the only such seating areas within blocks—perfect for voyeurs and those hoping to meet someone new and exciting.
The best time to watch the "man parade" from the outdoor recessed patio is between 10:30 p.m. and midnight as that's when the gay crowd is migrating from Soi 4 for the 11:30 p.m. opening drag show at DJ Station on Si 2.
Coffee Society is open 24 hours, and in the morning usually local people and tourists enjoy breakfast and coffee. Throughout the day business people and tourists mix together, and in the evening couples share quiet times together on the 2nd floor. The club-goers converge on the patio in the late evenings before going out, and after dancing the night away at the surrounding clubs, drop in for a meal or dessert before heading home or back to their homes or hotels.
Among their popular beverage selections are Cappuccino, Espresso and Iced Latté, and they have a large selection of tea which is also quite popular, as are their fruit juices and smoothies. Don't forget the decadent desserts, including homemade Apple and Cherry Pie (served warm with ice cream upon request), cheesecake and more! Also on the menu are soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and pastas, vegetarian selections and oh yes, wine and beer!
The management of Coffee Society strives to offer its customers good food in clean surroundings, where they can convene in the cozy booths or outside on the patio watching the world go by.
Coffee Society is located in the heart of Silom, on the northern side of Silom Road (which is the opposite side of the street from the Silom Complex off Rama IV Road), a few storefronts from the up-escalator to the sky train (BTS).
“Whatever your mood, whatever the time of day, enjoy the Coffee Society experience. It’s your society!”
